Do you have an area in a room that needs to Pop or simply stand out from all other parts of the room?
Rooms need one focal wall that stands out above all others. When you walk into a room, and one wall is decorated it just sets the tone of the room and it is usually the first thing you see. In my case, my focal wall is the wall my tv is on in my Livingroom.
I was given these bookcases and knew that I could revamp them into something new and something that would work for me. They were a blank slate, and I knew the trend that is now trending is that of wallpaper on bookshelves would be perfect to try with these.
I thought decorating them with wallpaper would make them brighter and more unique with the design, and I'm happy to say it has made the entire space come together and it's a great transformation.
The video shows the transformation in the making. I redecorated the shelves keeping in mind the decorating tips for shelves.
Steps:
Wallpaper for our bookshelves needed to be that to match the colors of our Livingroom. I knew I wanted something bright and unique so when I came across this unique style I decided to go with it. If you go with a busy design you will need to be patient because the designs will need to match up to each piece put on the wall. The wallpaper I chose was self stick. These sheets are wipeable also. This particular design was found at dollar tree in the kitchen section! There again we have savings. They have multiple designs to choose from depending on your location. They come in sheets.
I can honestly say I will love this for years to come.
2. Once you have your wallpaper ready, it's time to use it! You will need to prepare the back wall of your bookcase by cleaning it or whatever you need to do to have a smooth clean surface. Remove all décor and shelves. You will take a sponge or damp cloth and clean the area with cleaner using no chemicals with oils. I simply used dawn and warm water this time. This is leave behind a clean surface and make sure to let it dry good or use a dry cloth to dry it. If you have any dents in the shelf where the wallpaper will go you may want to fix them first as they can show through the wallpaper.
Materials List:
Wallpaper of Choice (preferred self stick)
A Table lined with cardboard for cutting
Ruler or straight edge
Measuring Tape
Exacto Knife
Pencil
Smoothing Tool for self stick wallpaper
I measured the width and height of the first wallpaper panel. Then I went and make a mark on the bookcase where I knew it would end after applying the first piece of wallpaper. When your working with self-stick wallpaper always keep in mind to always apply it overlapping a tiny bit due to the weather because it will contract and expand depending on the temperature in your house. . If you forget to overlap it you will sometimes see the line or the wall behind it if it gaps open over time.
By starting to the upper left go ahead and stick your first piece lined up with the previous marks you made. Go ahead and using the smoothing tool smooth out any bumps flat against the wall.
The good thing is if you need to adjust it you can by starting over again by simply peeling it off and repositioning it.
3. If you need two or more panels to go across the width of your shelf you will measure them like in step 2 being sure to overlap a bit all while matching up the unique print if you have one on your wallpaper. I used the exacto knife to cut off the excess not needed. Make sure to leave a little extra for error and not cut to much off. Repeat these steps for each
section.
4. Decorate Away!
This is the most enjoyable part! Decorating your bookshelves with wallpaper gives it all a unique look and brings your space to life with lots of character. I decorated with new items in a way I have never before to compliment my new wallpaper and it brought out the unique style I was looking for in the farmhouse look with some different touches. I incorporated in some of my previous décor items as well with the new.
I wanted something that I could use for a long while and if I ever decided to change my theme, it would be easy to do.
Stay tuned in as I transform other areas in my home and I'll be sharing other images with you here at Revamp-Hearts.
